Burton Carlson
The poems in Blackberries were for the most partwritten in the 1990's and the early 2000's. The titlepoem is a declaration of the poet's intent to let hispoems mature prior to publication, an actionoccurring a decade later. The poems in thisvolume differ from his earlier work in that they aremore intensely personal, technically moreaccomplished, and more consistent in voice, rhythmand sound. The stories are still there. The mostdeveloped series of poems concerns his son'ssuicide.
