The title Sepia Sapphire was derived from one of the poems in the book. Sepia is a dark brown pigment. Sapphire is a precious gemstone usually dark blue in color. Sapphire also was the nick name black men called beautiful black women, hence the title Sepia Sapphire actually means beautiful brown woman. Although the title appears to be a homage to black women, the book is not simply about black women. Sepia Sapphire is about connections. It is about the connections we make as human beings. The connections we make as family members, as members of this society, and with ourselves. This book is also about the connections we make that threaten or conflict with other connections we have made. Sepia Sapphire is about rage, love, and passion. It is a celebration of being human on all levels both light and dark.
