Literally millions of touristsfrom the four corners of the Earth have visited the Hawaiian Islands. While vacationing, most have seenoutrigger canoes with their six person crews paddling their way through thePacific. The sport has been seen in the exhibition arena of the Olympics andhas truly become internationally popular. The Molokai Channel Race boastsrepresentatives from the world over and is televised each year. One Paddle, One Sun is a book set in 1988 on the Island of Maui. The characters are eitheroutrigger canoe paddlers or their friends and family. There is no other book writtenconcerning the subject of Native Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe paddling that is afictional novel based on fact. The reader will meet a widevariety of colorful characters that add to the eclectic and often surreallandscape of Lahaina. The entire gamut of human interaction occurs between thebook's covers. The central character is YankeeDollar who coaches an extraordinary group of women. Free, Maka, Pua, Sophie, and others actually did make paddling history in the eighties. As One Paddle, One Sun clearly illustrates, obsessive dedication to any endeavor costs morethan any one paddler could have ever imagined. The book also provides a fairlyaccurate account of the turmoil caused by the introduction of thrillcraft tothe Islands. Much of the text actually happened aswritten and is significant because a first of its kind law was eventuallypassed protecting the sanctity and privacy of the Humpback Whales. One Paddle, One Sun is a no holds barred, occasionally X rated sagaabout the lives, loves, and survival of a couple of dozen people in paradise. It is not for the meek or timid.
