Charles Rowcroft (1798-1856), who also wrote under the pseudonym I. E. M., was a pastoralist and novelist, the son of Charles Thomas Rowcroft, a British consul in Peru. Rowcroft was educated at Eton, after which he went to Hobart Town, Australia, in 1821 and took up a grant of 2,000 acres (8 km²). He returned to England in 1826. In 1843 he published Tales of the Colonies; or, The Adventures of an Emigrant, followed by The Bushranger of Van Diemen's Land (1846). Another of his novels, An Emigrant in Search of a Colony (1851), is also connected with Australia. He also wrote Confessions of an Etonian (1846).
