After leaving his wife of four years, thirty three year old Peter Mullan moves into an old two family house and is intermittently brought back to his teenage days to the neighborhood in which he grew up in as a child. Peter befriends his upstairs neighbor, fourteen year old Beth Russell, who seems familiar to Peter. She tells Peter that she must tend to her bedridden mother. The mysterious young girl is not all what she seems to be, when Peter remembers her as a child who had a crush on him and supposedly committed suicide fifteen years earlier. A string of strange happenings and erotic dreams makes Peter wonder what is real, dreams, or imagination and is driven to a nervous breakdown. He is brought to a psychiatric ward in the county hospital where twenty four year old Liz Russell, Beth's twin sister, is a patient. Peter soon finds himself as a permanent resident of his delusional world and is driven to the edge of reality.
