En 1874 ingreso en el partido autonomista y ejercio el periodismo en La Tribuna y en El Nacional, entre cuyos redactores estaba Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Fue parlamentario desde 1875. Ingreso a la Facultad de Derecho y se graduo de abogado en 1878. Su carrera diplomatica empezo en Venezuela y Colombia, despues fue embajador en Viena en 1883, en Berlin en 1884 y en Madrid en 1886. A su regreso a Argentina tuvo una actividad politica relevante y ocupo el ministerio de relaciones exteriores bajo la presidencia de Luis Saenz Pena. Murio en Buenos Aires.
