Since the founding of the United States African Americans have sought to serve with pride and distinction for the rights and privilege that account for the cornerstone of this great nation. The road traveled by these patriots has been marked with discrimination and segregation; however, these great warriors fought with a gallantry both here and abroad to gain the respect of the nation and the world. Beginning with the commissioning of the first African American Naval Officers or "The Golden Thirteen" as they are known, the United States Naval Service has made officer diversity a top priority. Since these thirteen officers first broke the color lines that once divided the barriers of race and epitomized the Navy core values of honor, courage and commitment, the US Navy has struggled with the issue of racial equality within its service.
