When Eli's father, a carpenter in the service of King Solomon, is kidnapped by pirates and spirited away from his home, the young Phoenician boy determines to discover his fate and bring him home. Years later, Eli sets off on a quest in a huge undertaking, ably assisted by Sofer-rafa, a wise man who is both well-travelled and knowledgeable. Together they visit Tyre and Sidon, and the palace of King Solomon himself, to establish the truth of what happened, before setting off on an epic voyage that will take them across the Mediterranean Sea and beyond the Pillars of Hercules, to fabled lands beyond. Along the way, Eli will encounter pirates, gold mines of immeasurable wealth and the good and bad that exists in men. He will make friends and enemies in equal number, before he eventually finds his way to the Happy Islands that lie beyond the extent of the known world. But will he find his father and be able to rescue him? Or has his fate already been sealed?
