In June 2021, the Ministry of Prisons initiated a clandestine experiment, The Mescalero Project, a self-sustaining biosphere hidden in a remote area of the desert. Two hundred convicted felons serving life sentences without possibility of parole had been secretly transferred to the facility, their records at the Ministry having been expunged. On January 12, 2022, an intense solar disturbance occurred. Solares - geomagnetic solar winds of a greater magnitude than ever before recorded - disrupted satellite and landline communications, as well as power grids around the globe. Links to the national centers of government disintegrated and vast amounts of data were erased, bringing government agencies in many parts of the world to near chaos. By 2071, even though communications and power grids had long since been restored, the Ministry of Prisons was unaware that some files had never been retrieved. Among those missing were the data on the secret facility, and the Mescalero Project had been forgotten....
