Young Ignacio Finkleberry is a teenage boy with an unquenchable taste for adventure, much like his father, Jedediah. His love for excitement is only matched by his love for his family. When his father leaves his family, to fight in the American Revolution, Ignacio longs to be with him. But that desire will go unfulfilled. Shortly after his father's departure, Ignacio succumbs to illness and dies. His soul visits the Spirit World, where he requests and his granted an opportunity to return to the earth and seek one last meeting with his father. Unbeknownst to him, Jedediah is experiencing struggles of his own. He has been wounded badly, and then begins a race against time to keep him alive. Along the way, secrets are revealed, adventures are made, pirates are encountered, and passage through the Spirit World is paid in the form of coins for the fabled Boatman.
