Molly, who gave up her daughter for adoption, receives a letter to confirm that she is indeed the mother of Electra. Unable to write a reply, and unhappy with her current life in Seattle, Molly impulsively decides to drive across the country to the return address in Maine to meet her daughter. Upon arrival in Maine, Molly loses her nerve to follow through with the meeting. Unfortunately, Molly is not only out of courage but also out of money. By coincidence, she takes a job as a housekeeper for the Gelds, Electra's neighbors. Molly is further intimidated by the wealth of the summer community, where she finds herself as a member of the "help." Molly keeps her identity a secret to everyone, except Nathan, the Captain of the Gelds fleet. She is surprised to discover comfort and camaraderie with her fellow workers. Molly finds herself digging deeper into deception, where she feels the only way out is to leave the island or fess up to her past. The choice seems impossible for Molly. Will she risk losing her new life to face up with her past or continue to live a lie?
