The first issue of "Whiz Comics" was numbered Issue #2, due to there being two black-and-white unreleased issues called "Flash Comics No. 1" and "Thrill Comics No. 1" to secure advertisers. It was released in February 1940 and featured the origin of "Captain Marvel," a Superman-like hero, who is still around today. When Billy Batson, a young boy, speaks the magic word "SHAZAM!" an acronym of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, he transforms into an adult hero with the powers of superhuman strength, speed, flight, wisdom, courage, and other abilities. The most popular superhero of the 1940s, even outselling "Superman," Captain Marvel got his own series, and an entire franchise of other Marvel characters. The series ran until 1953, and eventually DC Comics acquired the rights to the characters. Starry Night Publishing is proud to bring you the original Golden Age comic book stories, featuring one of the top 50 greatest comic book heroes of all.
