Drawing on the long eighteenth century's myriad forms of children's media – including encyclopaedias, catechisms, nursery rhymes and moral tales – this study provides a new account of the origins of literature for children, showing that modern childhood was shaped by the early modern belief that children deserve access to complex ideas.
