For the young, lanky boy trying to escape a horrible home life, living in the saddle is a major improvement. For the men who ride alongside him, there is more to be learned than there is to be taught. Joe has run from a drunken, angry stepmother after being abandoned by his father. Running away without being caught, it was a risky escape accomplished, but the danger isn't over just because he has been accepted by cowboys and their remudas. The men are tough and the trails are rougher, but each day that he rides with them, he knows an acceptance that he hadn't ever known before. Based on the poem by N. Howard Thorp, Little Joe the Wrangler is a story about the true cowboy, the real men of the west, and of the boy who had the power to break through the tough exteriors, to their hearts within.
