Black Bottom Exodus is a novel which chronicles over 26 days the lives of African-Americans living on the fictional barrier island known as Black Bottom. We also glimpse the lives of Caucasians who live in and around Charleston, S. C. and who are in charge of maintaining the Jim Crow caste system. The central character Rocky, is a young physically challenged adult male whose life is turned upside down. As a consequence, Rocky sets out on a dangerous journey in a search for love, supported by his faith and by his old and new friends. Rocky's new friends stand in sharp contrast to him. He is functionally illiterate while his new friends are in the vanguard of the Harlem Renaissance. Black Bottom Exodus explores themes of religious diversity, sexuality, various types of abuse, and racial pride. Numerous problems are encountered and solved using the tools of courage, tenacity, critical thinking, faith, and friendship.
