The story is told in rhyme and can stand on its own or be used as a way of opening a dialogue about manners and how time and place affects our choices. Finally, without being didactic, the story encourages children to think about who is deserving of their best foot forward and whether a very important person could simply be you or me. The illustrations are intentionally ambiguous as to race or skin color.
