In the snowbound country of Montrovik, young Magda Ranhubell left home to become a priestess rather than marry her rich neighbor or govern her family estate. At the abbey, she learns to listen to her voices and worship the Great Mother. However, the Sanctuary is housing an ancient artifact - the Chalice of the Silver Reindeer. When the chalice asks Magda to remove it from the altar and take it into the snow mountains, Magda obeys. Somehow Magda must survive the perils of blizzards, wolves and bounty men to reach the summit. Although she is joined by a fellow outlaw, a mage who is also on a quest, she is not sure if he will be friend or foe. Soon it is clear they both have a much more dangerous enemy who will do anything to get his hands on the chalice and use its power for evil.
