Maung Swe Tint?s short story ?Being Eaten Alive on a Cool, Pleasant Winter?s Morning? was first published in Shumawa magazine 1981. In clear, well-written Burmese prose, Maung Swe Tint meditatively details the daily life and concerns of an intellectual of the Burma Socialist Programme Party period. Implicit in the story are concerns for survival in that period of oppression, and the fragility of life. The story has been adapted for learners by Nance Cunningham. The book starts with a simplified version, and includes the original version with a translation on facing pages. Explanatory material and exercises help the learner appreciate and consolidate the material. This book is the first in the Readings from Pansodan series, which makes stories, essays, and other short pieces of literature accessible to intermediate Burmese language learners. As all Readings are based on Burmese-language originals, the learner absorbs the natural discourse of educated usage. Readings are reproduced with the spelling and typesetting conventions as they were originally published, to assist learners in their further reading of pre-spelling-reform literature.
