Fairhope, Alabama, founded in 1895 to prove Henry George's theory of a single tax, has prospered in recent years in spite of, rather than because of that fact. THE FAIR HOPE OF HEAVEN takes an introspective glance at the town as it once was, revealing some of its famous visitors including Clarence Darrow and Upton Sinclair, and tells of the town's founder, E. B. Gaston, and the world-renowned proponent of progressive education, Marietta Johnson, who started her school there. With character sketches of oddballs and intellectuals she remembers, the author paints a nostalgic picture of a 20th century American utopian community.
