The Last Best Resort is a story set amongst geopolitical chaos as the world tries to find its balance ten years after the total economic collapse of civilizations. What would you do, and how would you survive, if there were no effective government, no police or army, no dependable services? Set primarily on Sanibel Island, but also the Southern U. S. and Western Europe, spanning 58 days in the year 2023, The Last Best Resort examines the über-rich as they strive to maintain the lifestyle to which they are accustomed, the military leaders and the administrators that scheme and maneuver within the new world order, and the everyday men and women who take life one day at a time. The Last Best Resort is a sometimes serious, but often humorous, and ultimately optimistic tale of survival in style. The characters are engaging and far-ranging. They await your discovery as they strive to survive in style on Sanibel Island, the nation's Last Best Resort. Life on Sanibel Island is an anomaly - an artificial attempt to live the life that went before. Most people on the island are not deluded, just determined to preserve some semblance of "civilization." This former resort island now becomes their last best resort in an attempt to deny the changes sweeping over the planet. For some, the island is a base of operations; for others, the better of poor choices for hanging on to a vanishing lifestyle. Some of these characters will grow, becoming wiser, more mature, self confident, change agents, and simple decent people. Some will leave; some will die. John Standridge, M. D., is a professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga. Professor Standridge is the author of more than 40 scientific publications. His first book, The Delaney Kids: Bought and Paid For, is the documentary of a personal journey of discovery as one of three siblings who were separated by a black market baby ring.
