Stephanie, keeper of the Tree of Life, carries Vaughn's child, of the people of True Words. A child conceived of True Meaning and True Words. The Ethereal charges Heaven with a Truce violation, demanding they destroy the child before birth. Neither Heaven, nor any on Earth can help. Left alone, Stephanie and Vaughn fight to protect the life of their unborn child, but if Stephanie gives birth, the Truce is broken, and the ethereal demons will invade Earth, and Vaughn and Stephanie can't allow this, either. They are caught between Right and Right. They can't kill their child, and they can't endanger the world. Only a faithwalker can find a solution. Faithwalkers walk through all realities by and with meaning.

Vaugh travels to Heaven, down into the Ethereal, and over the Earth to find a solution but discovers there are even far greater dangers, while Stephanie battles Earthly human-demon hybrids, ethereal gargoyles, and ethereal fire breathing dragons, all thrown against her to destroy a most special child.
