Rookie reporter Serge Dunlov and his photographer friend Thad Morton are assigned to find the American anthropologist who sparked the Mushroom Rush in the 1960s when he found and wrote about Maria Sabina, the high priestess of the magic mushroom cult in Mexico's Sierra Mazatec. The anthropologist has disappeared. The mission quickly turns into a brutal encounter with local officials. The two young men become involved in the indigenous struggle for respect and equal rights. They climb the mountain to 'trip' with Maria Sabina. The backdrop to their adventure is the invasion of the Sierra Mazatec by American hippies and dropouts searching for new drug experiences, new idols after being disillusioned by the inhumanity of the Vietnam War and the failure and flaws of world communism.
