Blackguards and Red Stockings is a history of the National Association, the first professional baseball league. The NA existed from 1871 through 1875, when it was disbanded upon the formation of the National League. Blackguards describes the players, the nineteenth century game and the difficulties faced by the loosely-managed Association. Each season is described in detail. The book was awarded the 1993 SABR/Macmillan Award for best baseball history.
