The thoughts of Harold Smith, curate of Crispin Parva, are stimulated by medieval carvings - especially one of a holy man being tempted by a harlot. As he travels to Scotland thoughts of the carved harlot mingle with seductive memories of Cindy Clarke at the bell-ringers' social. Then he sees two women hitch-hikers, and one looks rather like Cindy.
