This is an autobiography involving the rigors of becoming a doctor in Canada in the 60's. It deals with coming of age in a post-war period as young Jewish person, subject to the prejudices of the time. I with my son are graduates of University of Toronto. This is my story of going through the process here. This is now an historical document. The book is also about survival, success through adversity.
The book BUT HE JUST COULDN'T BREATHE touches on the medical role of dealing with death. Only doctors, nurses, and in fact soldiers do this (as I realized more lately). That is, dealing with death, trying to stop people from dying.
The other side of the coin is sex, or life, and the book deals with this flip side as well. Therefore it is Eros and Thanatos, Sex and Death. The underlying elements of the autobiography are Romance, Birth, Death, and Regeneration. BUT HE JUST COULDN'T BREATHE refers to the terminal state when one is dying, since as one dies he cannot breathe. It simultaneously refers to the state of romance, why I lost my first girlfriend - a love story - because I could not breathe when I was with her.
I with my son and my assistant run a very effective psychiatric practice treating injured workers behaviorally. We have garnered congratulations in two assessments by the medical licensing body (CPSO) for our work.
