Pretending to be already married to Lord Beresford is certainly improper, but only if someone discovers it - or so Elinor argues. If only Elinor's charade can hold long enough for her to find the flute, the roost, and the murderer - before the killer strikes again or the 'Beresfords' are thrown off the island in disgrace.
