If we have already inherited so much, why would we still be striving so hard to get it?If in Christ we are extremely wealthy, healthy and happy, then why are we not living as though it is so? We have striven to live holy lives, yet we have not seen any reward for our efforts. At rebirth we were awarded a bountiful inheritance, and it was put into our personal trust accounts so that we can make withdrawals from it at our leisure. Our inheritances did not come to us because of our holiness, and therefore cannot be taken away because of our lack thereof. If we insist on working for it, there aren't enough hours in the day to do enough to deserve it. But it is already ours. Striving for inheritances makes nonsense of bequests-they are entirely free of charge! As ludicrous as this is, it is nevertheless taught from many pulpits. When we discover how highly we are esteemed, without even having to make any promises to change ourselves, our self-esteem gets a short in the arm, boosting our sense of worthiness.
