You?ve heard all the clichés. ?When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.? ?When the going gets tough, the tough get going.? ?Turn that frown upside-down.? And my personal favorite, ?What doesn?t kill you makes you stronger.? Well, I?m not going to open a lemonade stand any time soon. Sometimes when I turn my frown upside-down it looks fake. And that last one would help if I were a tree. But let?s go on.

These are all things people say in times when life takes a detour off easy street. They mean well, but when you are faced with the trial of your life, a little lemonade and a smile just won?t do the job. When there?s more against you than you can handle, there is one saying that is much more than a cliché: ?Attitude is everything.?

I was given the perfect opportunity to have a horrible attitude on Jan 26, 2006. That was the day I woke up from what I thought was a simple operative procedure only to see my husband Craig at the foot of my gurney in tears.
