As a central character in the book, we learn that Johnson was in love with the game of basketball at a very early age. Whether it was playing against her Uncles and Cousins, or her friends at school, she was happiest with a basketball in her hands. The story then puts Johnson in a position where as a young child, she needs to make a tough choice, one that could have a serious consequence-taking away her opportunity to play basketball. Her (Late Grandmother Jewel Johnson) is also a huge character in the story, Which shouldnt be any surprise that this book is dedicated to her memory. This book is an opportunity for Johnson to share her story with a younger generation, especially young girls that are interested in playing sports. This book also presents a unique format, that of a hybrid between a chapter and picture book. This title contains more content than a picture book, but less content and more illustrations than a typical chapter book. This format is most beneficial for a variety of later elementary school age groups, especially those students transitioning from picture to chapter books, or ELL (English language learner) readers who enjoy reading stories with illustrations.
