"We're taking a shortcut." So began another one of what became known as "Dad's Famous Shortcuts". They were never short, never what Dad expected, and they were never (well, almost never) boring. As kids, we had a love/hate relationship with Dad's shortcuts. They usually meant a longer, not shorter, car ride which we stoically endured, but also a more colorful, exciting, and humorous journey which we came to cherish for years afterwards.
