The protagonist, Harry Socrates Maclaren, is a magician and mentalist. Maclaren is the medium for the Houdini Séance at the Hollywood Magic Castle. He also helps the police solve crimes with his psychic ability. His main mission is to destroy a monster from another dimension. However, Maclaren also has some exciting and fantastic adventures in time and space. This novel is basically a satiric fantasy about magic, horror, and the supernatural but it's all in fun.
