Glacier National Park is among those places in the world with take-your-breath-away scenery. Unique in its combination of rugged mountains, glaciers, wide valleys, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes, it is rich in natural beauty. However, these same features tell stories of the distant past that led to the national park that we know today. The rocks themselves tell the more than a billion-year history that shaped the area. Within the rocks are clues to ancient wildlife and ecosystems very different from those we experience in the area today. The park is also rich with tales of Native Americans who resided in this area long before immigrants of European descent arrived. Following the era of Native American dominance in the area, settlers eventually came in great numbers in pursuit of their fortunes from the natural resources they hoped to exploit. However, it was tourism that brought the greatest number of visitors, and that indirectly led to the preservation and establishment of Glacier National Park.
