The papers assembled in this volume were originally delivered at a seminar on philosophy and Roman society held at the University of Oxford, 1985-1987. The participants of this interdisciplinary seminar included philosophers, historians and classical scholars. Most of the papers are concerned with the intellectual life of the first century BC as, in the editors' opinion, the century was a formative one and it is well documented. Lucretius, Posidonius, Antiochus of Ascalon, Cicero and Plutarch are among the thinkers and writers examined.
